Exhibition space

Exhibition-event dedicated to one of the most beloved Italian and international artists on the tenth anniversary of his death, to celebrate his human and musical genius.
Extended until February 5, 2023

A visual and sensorial journey, an immersive experience that transforms the exhibition space into a scenic box. The capital is another important stage in a journey that began in Bologna and will continue in 2023, on the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of the artist's birth, in Naples, Pesaro, Milan and then abroad.

Dalla and Rome, a passionate love correspondence, memorable years for the singer-songwriter. The Urbe is a place of magnetic power for its poetic visionaryness, it is the inspiration for songs written in the alleyways on 'nights of miracles', it is a magical meeting place for the singer's spirit. In the Trastevere district, at Vicolo del Buco 7, where he lived until the mid-1980s, stands a plaque with a verse from La sera dei miracoli, a song that symbolises his bond with the city. 'I am increasingly amazed by the relationship that exists between Rome and me. A unique city in the world, an extraordinary stage that unites all social classes, where there is no contrast, there is a desire to be together', the artist had declared.
Rome was also the city complicit in memorable encounters, two above all: Federico Fellini and Andy Warhol, with whom he happened to play pinball at the Notegen in Via del Babuino, without knowing who he was. A giant poet who changed the course of songwriting, Dalla has created unforgettable milestones in music history and won numerous awards, including three Nastri d'Argento and two David di Donatello. The soundtrack of Carlo Verdone's Borotalco was a turning point in the relationship between music and cinema, especially for the inclusion of Cara, an author's song that continues to accompany the film's 'evergreen' success.

The exhibition recounts Lucio Dalla's role in the crucial cultural transition from the 1960s onwards, the modernity of his thinking, the eclecticism of his actions. Dalla, protagonist of a continuous expressive search for sonority, innovator and forerunner of styles, leading exponent of the experimental movement, is still unparalleled today.
It is certainly not an easy task to recount fifty years of history in an exhibition. Everything stems from a long search for materials, many of which are on display for the first time, documenting the entire human journey of one of Italy's best-loved artists. A singer of life and sounds who with biting irony and a poetic gaze conquered the hearts of all; not only a musician but also an actor, writer, theatre director, sports lover, curious and passionate devotee of countless interests.

Through an extensive collection of objects, documents, photos, record covers, videos, stage clothes, posters of the films in which he participated, posters, and the rich collection of hats and caps, we discover Lucio's intimacy and the power of his music. For us spectators, anche se il tempo passa, his memory still makes our hearts tremble. His evocative notes belong to us and remain the soundtrack of our existence.
There are more than ten sections: Family - Childhood - Friendships - Music, Dalla tells his story, The Clarinet, The Lucio Dalla Museum, his music, cinema, theatre, television, Universo Dalla, Dalla and Roversi, Dalla and Rome; this last section, unpublished, is dedicated to the relationship between the singer and the capital. The research work that led to this exhibition culminates in the Universo Dalla section, which presents numerous photos of cultural figures, the most important singers, and the many collaborators who accompanied him in his work: an encyclopaedia of over 250 people with whom he had professional and friendship relations, many of whom followed him throughout his life.

Promoted and produced by Roma Culture - Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, is organised and produced by C.O.R. Creare Organizzare Realizzare S.r.l with the support of Regione Lazio. The exhibition, curated by Alessandro Nicosia with Fondazione Lucio Dalla, is sponsored by RAI with the participation of Archivio Luce Cinecittà. Special partner Lavoropiù. Organisational support from Zètema Progetto Cultura. With the technical collaboration of Universal Music Publishing Group, SIAE Società Italiana degli Autori e degli Editori, BIG|Broker Insurance Group. Catalogue Skira editore. Technical sponsor Città del Sole.

With the aim of encouraging the participation of everyone in the cultural life of the city, the Sovrintendenza Capitolina continues its commitment to extending the accessibility services to temporary exhibitions. In order to facilitate the enjoyment of an exhibition dedicated to music also by deaf visitors, the exhibition includes three videos in which performer Mauro Iandolo, from the cooperative Segni di Integrazione-Lazio, interprets in Italian sign language (LIS) three famous songs by Lucio Dalla, La sera dei miracoli, Cara, 4 March 1943. In the videos, the universal language of the body becomes music before our eyes, rendering in visual terms not only the words of the lyrics but also the melodies and rhythms. There is also a calendar of guided tours with LIS interpreters, organised through the service offered by the Department of Social Policies and Health - Personal Services Directorate. Visually impaired persons will also have access to dedicated aids, and in particular a route equipped with Braille panels and related audio descriptions, organised in cooperation with the Omero State Tactile Museum. A calendar of free tactile visits, guided by specialised operators, is also available.

For the entire duration of the exhibition, the exhibition space also becomes an educational space, with meetings for all age groups aimed at exploring Lucio Dalla's poetic universe. In particular, school students are led, thanks to the collaboration with the Lucio Dalla Foundation, on an exploration of the Bolognese singer's artistic journey, following the interweaving between his life and the lyrics of his memorable songs.
