HOKUSAI. Sulle orme del Maestro
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) owes his international fame to The Great Wave, part of the Thirty-six Views of Mt Fuji series, and to the influence of reproductions of his works on artists in Paris at the end of the 1800s, including Manet, Toulouse Lautrec, Van Gogh and Monet, masters of the Japonisme movement.
He experimented with different formats and techniques while portraying a huge variety of subjects, from landscape, nature, portraits of Kabuki actors, beautiful women and warriors, to images of ghosts, spirits and semi-mythic creatures. The work of Hokusai, undisputed master of ukiyo-e (literally, “images of the Floating World”), active between the late 1700s and early 1800s, is extraordinarily vast and versatile, and has been widely distributed over time as well, thanks to the artist’s many followers. Aiming to provide an in-depth look at the work and legacy of this great Japanese master, Hokusai: sulle orme del Maestro proposes a selection of approximately two hundred works, including paintings, illustrated books, and polychrome woodblock prints (to be exhibited in two shifts of one hundred works each in order to avoid compromising the fragile materials). Furthermore, his production is displayed along with that of various artists who followed in his footsteps, introducing new lines, shapes and colour relationships into the classic currents of ukiyo-e. The exhibition is promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Crescita culturale – Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali with the support of the Japanese Embassy, organized by MondoMostre Skira and Zètema Progetto Cultura, and curated by Rossella Menegazzo. It includes precious loans from Chiba City Museum of Art and other renowned collections in Japan, as well as from the Museo d’Arte Orientale Edoardo Chiossone in Genoa.
